A logo (Greek λογότυπος = logotypos) is a graphical element, (ideogram, symbol, emblem, icon, sign) that, together with its logotype (a uniquely set and arranged typeface) form a trademark or commercial brand. Typically, a logo's design is for immediate recognition, inspiring trust, admiration, loyalty and an implied superiority. The logo is one aspect of a company's commercial brand, or economic entity, and its shapes, colours, fonts, and images usually are different from others in a similar market. Logos are also used to identify organizations and other non-commercial entities.
What makes a good logo design? A good logo design in theory should be able to create both a positive and powerful first impression as well as create a long lasting one. A good logo also builds your brand and gives a polished, more professional look to your business. Your logo should reflect the nature of your business and what kind of services you offer. Practically speaking, a good logo design should be simple and work well in black and white; to work well in all mediums. The simpler your logo, the easier it is on the eyes and the faster it will register in your future customers' minds. Choose only colours that represent your company well. Yellow or sky blue gives a youthful and energetic look. Navy or lavender gives a calm, professional feel. Red, orange means strong and intense while green and magenta commands respect. There are four principles that make for a great logo design. A great logo must: - Follow solid basic design principles - The fundamentals include, but are not limited to space, color, form, consistency, and clarity. It is recommended that a design professional have some influence on your logo, whether it be redesign or touching up, to ensure basic design principles are followed.
- Be functional - A logo may be seen on the web, in a brochure, on a t-shirt, or on glassware. It could be used on dark backgrounds, on light backgrounds, on textured surfaces, or could be used in various sizes like on an awning or on a postcard. A great logo must have the ability to be printed or used in all of the contexts mentioned above and still represent the company effectively. A few things that are important when talking about functionality are the simplicity, scalability, colour, and depth.
- Represent the company - A logo needs to represent the company it serves. This means that the style must be easily identified with the industry/product/service and must give a clear picture of what is being marketed.
- Be unique - A unique logo will also tend to be one that stands the test of time.
